St. Andrew’s Read-A-Thon Casts a Spell on Middle School Readers

At 2:15 p.m. on Feb. 20, the doors to Towers Library welcomed 24 Middle School boys eager to spend the next eight hours in a place where stories come to life.

The Middle School Library Advisory Council proudly hosted the St. Andrew’s College Middle School Read‑A‑Thon for a fourth year, this time with a Harry Potter theme. Head Librarian, Melissa Ramon, welcomed the readers for what would become an adventure of imagination, friendship, and literary magic.

The library buzzed with excitement as the boys settled into comfy couches and cozy corners. Library furniture was transformed into forts, and the darkness outside provided an appropriately spooky vibe. Favourite books were pulled from the shelves: fantasy epics, graphic novels, mysteries, and timeless classics. For long, peaceful stretches, the only sounds were the turning of pages and the occasional quiet laugh as readers became completely immersed in their stories.

But this was no ordinary reading marathon. Every so often, Melissa announced a reading-themed challenge, and the room would erupt with boys racing to participate in a LEGO challenge, an author-themed Kahoot, and a scavenger hunt.

As the evening progressed, the group made their way to Cole Dining Hall for a Hogwarts-inspired banquet. The menu featured pumpkin juice, Yorkshire puddings, a fruit crumble, and a candy buffet. There was a wall of magic candles, and one of our young readers, who happened to be celebrating a birthday, used the magic wand to set them alight. It was all very magical!

By the time the clock chimed 10 p.m., the boys were tired and happy, leaving the library with their books tucked under their arms, gift bags containing exclusive 2026 Read-A-Thon T-shirts, and the affirmation that reading is a shared adventure.
