Cybersecurity Expert Urges Students to Think Before They Click

Students and parents at St. Andrew's College and St. Anne's School recently heard from cybersecurity and online safety expert, Paul Davis, who delivered a series of presentations focused on digital citizenship, privacy, and responsible technology use.

Speaking to Middle School students in the morning on Oct. 27, Paul asked the audience in Ketchum Auditorium to consider the lasting impact of their online actions. Drawing from his extensive work with schools, law enforcement agencies, and families, he emphasized that every interaction online leaves a digital trail and that the choices students make today can affect future opportunities.

"Technology doesn't lie. Humans do," Paul told students, encouraging them to take personal responsibility for their online behaviour. He reminded them that messages, photos, comments, and posts can have consequences far beyond the moment they are shared.

A key theme throughout the presentations was the importance of treating others with kindness and respect, both in person and online. He urged students not to ignore incidents of cyberbullying, harassment, or intimidation and stressed the importance of speaking with a trusted adult when concerns arise. He reassured students that seeking help should never be accompanied by fear, embarrassment, or shame.

The presentations also explored how smartphones, apps, social media platforms, websites, and digital services collect and use data. Through relatable examples, Paul helped students better understand how their information is tracked online and encouraged them to make informed decisions about the technology they use every day.

As artificial intelligence continues to become a part of students' lives, he encouraged the young people to prioritize critical thinking, research, and fact-checking skills. While AI can be a useful tool, he cautioned against relying on it as a substitute for independent thought and learning.
Throughout the day, Paul reinforced a message that resonated with students of all ages: reputation matters. A momentary decision online can have a lasting impact on future academic, athletic, and professional opportunities.

Paul also met with Upper School students in the afternoon and later hosted an evening session for parents, offering practical strategies to help families navigate an increasingly complex digital world. Together, the sessions provided valuable insight into online safety, privacy, and the shared responsibility of creating healthy digital habits.
