Up against a team who had scored 19 goals in their two previous games, including beating a team by six that the boys had recently tied, the U14A Soccer teams’ expectations were rather modest at Upper Canada College’s muddy home grounds.
To the boys’ credit, they diligently followed the game plan to remain positive and never quit despite being outshot 27 to 3.
In fact, UCC’s goals were all from simple defensive mis-kicks that allowed their forwards to dribble in alone for clean shots.
Their remaining opportunities were generally from a distance, which our goalkeeper Ramon Chedraui confidently parried or scooped up cleanly.
Missing two key central defenders, Joaquin Garza Mouret and Roan Binnendyk stepped into unfamiliar positions and worked tirelessly all game to frustrate opponent attacks. Wide defenders Ethan Baxter, Dylan White, and Alex Nikols made tremendous improvements, demonstrating they could challenge technically more experienced strikers and frequently interrupt skillful passing routines.
Beckett Fullerton and Enrique Marcos Villarreal never stopped running, covering large stretches of the midfield in order to unsettle opponent tactics. The lone striker, Domingo Valdes Padilla, managed to twice elude a constant swarm of four to five defenders, getting clean shots and scoring on one.
Despite a record of two losses and a tie, the boys are confident moving forward that victories are in store for this hard working, determined group of young Andrean athletes.
All boys deserved "men-of-the-match" honours!
Final score: UCC 3 – SAC 1
