The Focus Festival of the Arts lit up the St. Andrew’s College campus May 7-9 with an extraordinary three-day celebration marking 36 years of creative expression and theatrical exploration. The event brought together an eclectic mix of student-led performances, musical showcases, and visual art installations.
“This year’s festival was nothing short of spectacular,” said Kevin McHenry, Head of School. “From the dazzling stage work and gallery exhibitions to the music echoing through our halls, the talent on display was truly inspiring.”
A centrepiece of this year’s program was the high-energy production of Mamma Mia!, a vibrant, family-oriented production that had the audience tapping along to ABBA’s timeless pop masterpieces. Audiences were also treated to productions of Lord of the Flies, Where the Wild Things Are, staged by our friends from our partner school, St. Anne’ School (SAS), and a collection of original one-act plays written and directed by students from SAC and SAS. Performances took place across various campus venues, including Wirth Theatre, Reininger Rehearsal Room, and the makerspace.
Under the artistic direction of William Scoular, Head of Drama & Film, and supported by a team of visiting directors and choreographers, the festival is a collaborative tour de force. Even as a few faculty members took to the stage in one of the 20 productions, joining hundreds of students and special guests in showcasing their artistic prowess.
The Staunton Gallery served as a hub for visual creativity, with a student art exhibition representing all grade levels. Attendees could also engage in hands-on activities, such as contributing to a collective painting, and viewing the collective works from past years inspired by the Group of Seven’s Lawren Harris from the SAC Class of 1906.
Music filled the air as the Jazz Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble delivered dynamic performances in the Robert and Jilla Williams Band Room. Audiences were also wowed by a performance from the SAS Concert Band.
The festival’s success was built on the passion and dedication of students, faculty, and theatre techs who invested countless hours into bringing the experience to life.
“There was a genuine sense of connection – laughter, emotion, and shared memories with current families, friends, and alumni,” reflected Kevin.
The Friday night finale capped off the event with flair, featuring a festive dinner in Cole Hall and a rousing performance by our renowned Pipes & Drums.
“With such an incredible showing of talent and community spirit, I’m already anticipating what our fall production will bring,” Kevin added.
