Gary West Hockey Tournament lined up for January 12-14

The Gary West Sr. Boys Hockey Tournament has grown to eight teams in its second year.

St. Andrew’s Varsity B team will host the tournament January 12 to 14, which is the Martin Luther King holiday weekend in the United States, a consideration for teams travelling from south of the border.

The guest teams are:
The Kiski School, Saltsburg, Pennsylvania
Gilmour Academy, Gates Mills, Ohio
Collège Regina Assumpta, Montreal, Quebec
Lower Canada College, Montreal, Quebec
King City Secondary School, King City, Ontario
Everest Academy, Thornhill, Ontario
Upper Canada College, Toronto, Ontario

The teams are divided into two divisions this year, Kinney and Foy, both named after former Andreans.

Ron Kinney taught Science at St. Andrew's College from 1965 until 1999 and was Head of the Science Department from 1989 until his retirement. He was heavily involved in the SAC hockey program, coaching many teams over the years including First Hockey. Mr. Kinney passed away in April 2004.

Aubrey Foy started at St. Andrew’s in 1976 as Head of Music and was Housemaster of Flavelle for 17 years. He is also credited with reviving the Pipe & Drum Corps. Mr. Foy held the position of Head of Admission when he retired after 27 years at SAC. He passed away in 2003.

The tournament itself is named in honour of a prominent Andrean, Gary West, a teacher at St. Andrew’s College for 33 years, starting in 1963. Mr. West was Athletic Director from 1965 until his retirement.

At the time of last year’s inaugural six-team tournament, Gary and his wife, Wilma, were unfortunately on vacation and unable to attend. This year, Gary plans to be front and centre, carrying out the ceremonial puck-drop at the 7:30 p.m. game Friday at the La Brier Family Arena.

Most games will be at the La Brier Family Arena, with a couple of the Friday night games being played at the Aurora Community Centre and the Aurora Family Leisure Complex.

The Gary West Cup will be presented to the Championship team, along with a ‘keeper’ banner. The Cup resides at St. Andrew’s College year round. In addition, a six-member all-star team will be selected to recognize outstanding tournament play. Plaques will be awarded to three forwards, two defensemen, and one goaltender.
