Paint, yarn, and clay were the tools of the day

It was a sea of art smocks in Staunton Gallery, throughout Rogers Hall, in Towers Library, and in Wirth Art Centre as students in Grades 5 to 8, plus a few Grade 9s, tried their hand at a variety of arts and crafts Feb. 8 during Visual Arts Day.

“This day is meant to expose students to different mediums and allow them to meet practicing artists,” says Randi Berman, Arts Coordinator. She added that the day also gives students an element of choice as they are excited to select which sessions to attend.

One table in the Middle School art room was devoted to building mythical beasts from clay. Beside that table, boys used their creativity to hand-build insects and other creepy crawlies out of clay. The wheels were in motion in the neighbouring pottery studio as boys formed bowls and vases. Boys made colourful creatures out of polymer clay, and yet other students learned how to make pots using a coiling method.

Fibre arts were also offered through a weaving workshop and crochet and knitting lessons.  Sewing skills were honed as boys crafted soft creatures out of felt.

Plenty of canvases were used as guest artists taught the students using alcohol inks, acrylic paint, and watercolour techniques.

A self-portrait session, modern brush calligraphy, cartooning, block printing, and wood burning rounded out the day’s offerings.
