St. Andrew’s community pays respect to Queen Elizabeth II

St. Andrew’s College staff and students paid their respects on the day Queen Elizabeth II was laid to rest.

All available staff gathered in Cole Hall Monday, Sept. 19 for a short reflection led by Mr. Stewart, Associate Director, Upper School, Student Affairs. He noted the former Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms, including Canada, served for 70 years and 214 days until she passed away on Sept. 8.

Mr. Stewart referred to her passing as a defining moment and the end of an era.

“Her passing is significant, not just because of her long reign, but because of who she was,” he said, a slideshow playing behind him showcasing photos of the Queen and her family over the decades.

He mentioned her service to her country during the Second World War, her dedication to her people, and her sense of humour.

Those in the dining hall watched a three-minute CNN video of Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years as the U.K. monarch.

The entire school marked her passing with a moment of silence at 1 p.m.

The day after her death, there was a service during the Upper School Assembly. Mr. Stewart also held a service in Memorial Chapel for the First Cygnets of St. Anne’s School on Sept. 19.

Matt MacIsaac, Director of Piping & Drumming, played The Queen Elizabeth II’s Salute at all three memorial services.
