Experiencing the Wilderness - Grade 10 Outdoor Leadership

The Grade 10 Outdoor Leadership Trips recently came to a successful completion at Killbear Provincial Park. As a summative assessment, every Grade 10 Outdoor Leadership/Cadets program student travels on a 4-day trip to apply their knowledge of outdoor education and survival skills. It was a challenging year to run all four of the program’s trips with lots of logistical hurdles to overcome, but the Grade 10 Staff Team of Mr. Coll, Ms. Keating, Mr. Murray, and Ms. Zhou, were up to the task.

The students were challenged to demonstrate the skills they have learned in the course; navigation, self-care, shelter, fire building, and many more. The first trip was a mountain biking trip in the fall. The second trip was a winter skills trip in February, where students built quinzhees, went skiing, and snowshoed. The third trip was a canoe trip in May and the final trip involved sea kayaking and mountain biking on Georgian Bay.

Thanks to Mr. Ramon, Mr. Shrimpton and Mr. Inglis who also helped staff the trips.
