The robots are back in town

Twenty-nine students, a few staff members, and a handful of robots travelled to Montreal on April 29 to compete in the RoboCupJunior national qualifier. SAC sent 11 teams with students ranging from Grades 9 to 11 playing for the chance to represent Canada at the world championships this summer in Bangkok, Thailand.

The last time SAC competed in Montreal was four years ago. At this year’s competition, each team competed in one of three events: Rescue Line, Rescue Maze, or Soccer. All events required a team to provide a robot that could perform all tasks autonomously; no human control was allowed.

The robots performed incredibly well. In total, seven soccer teams competed, and one of SAC’s teams went undefeated on both days, winning its final match by a score of 10-0.

The five Rescue Maze teams had to battle amongst themselves for the trophy because no other schools had teams that could compete in this competition.

The Rescue Line teams did well, and SAC’s top finisher earned the third-place trophy out of 11 teams. The judges debated giving them the first-place award because, in a practice run, their robot completed the challenge with a perfect run.

When all was said and done, SAC teams returned home with seven trophies: five first-place trophies, one second-place trophy, and one third-place trophy. There is a chance that a couple of St. Andrew’s teams will be going to the world championships this summer to represent Canada in both the Soccer and the Rescue Challenge in Bangkok.

Congratulations to all the boys on their competition success and, more importantly, their resilience and good citizenship.
