Winter Wellness around campus

As the temperature continues to plunge, it is as vital as ever for students to participate in wellness activities around the school. Now that we are fully returning to in-person learning, the boys can safely enjoy the Canadian winter together!

On Friday, Jan. 21, Middle School students visited Willow Farm to get outside and enjoy the snow. Some boys laced up snowshoes while others took to some cross-country skiing. Since its addition to SAC, Willow Farm has become an essential piece to our Outdoor Education program in all seasons.

On the weekend, the outdoor rink on the Quad was taken over by some members of the U18AA Hockey team. The boys took advantage of the nice weather and joined coaches Taylor Johnston and Joel Morrissey for a game of shinny. The rink on the Quad is something students look forward to each winter, and this year it was expanded to the size of a regulation ice sheet.

The rink has been an excellent way for students to burn off steam safely outdoors during the winter. Middle School boys follow a weekly schedule during recess to use the rink. Each day a different grade is assigned time during break to hit the ice with their skates, stick, and most importantly, a helmet.

Another way wellness is being promoted around the school is through Causal Dress days. Students have enjoyed back-to-back casual dress Fridays, and the most recent one on Jan. 28 had a unique twist. In honour of the MacPherson Hockey Tournament this weekend, the boys participated in a Red and White spirit and hockey sweater dress day. These monthly days allow the boys to be a little more comfortable and raise funds for various charities chosen by the student-led Outreach Council.

The MacPherson tourney is typically enjoyed by our entire community of students, parents, and Old Boys who gather to cheer on our 1st Hockey Saints, but this year we are cheering them on through streaming at www.themacpherson.ca. Last year’s tournament was cancelled so, rather than cancel the tournament for a second year, the team secured a venue in the United States. The Saints have already played their first game against arch-rivals UCC, which they won with a score of 7-1.
