‘An Andrean Christmas’ proves to be a magical evening

An Andrean Christmas ushered in the magic of the season on Dec. 10.

Students, faculty, and staff spent weeks busily preparing for the annual extravaganza that brings Andreans together in a celebration of the holiday season.

The show was held at Roy Thomson Hall in downtown Toronto. Despite pandemic restrictions, the audience was filled with joyous masked parents, siblings, friends of the school, and Old Boys. They were treated to some familiar songs and some new treats.

The Pipes & Drums led things off with their renditions of The Gael and Jingle Bells, followed by performances by the Wind Ensemble, the SAC Dramatic Society, the Drum Corps, the Jazz Band, the Middle School Band, and the School Choir.

There were also a few of solo student acts, one featuring Henry Paluch, Head Prefect, on the bagpipes and another with Andrew Kam on guitar, plus a combo with David Buckley singing his song, Call On Me Brother, with backup vocals by his brother, Thomas.

In years past, Old Boys in the audience have been invited onstage to sing Amazing Grace together. This highlight was put on hold this year due to COVID-19 restrictions, and the Old Boys stood at their seats to sing.

Last year’s Andrean Christmas was a virtual concert due to the global pandemic, so this year, the grads of 2021 were invited to sit together near the front as a way for them to bond and make the evening special.

It wasn’t just a treat for the ears; there was also a visual arts display on a big screen, courtesy of talented students from the Art program. One Upper School artist, Charlie McDonell, had the honour of having his piece chosen for the cover of the Andrean Christmas program.
