New Look 1st Soccer Saints Going Global

With a roster that reaches across Canada, and the world, the new-look Saints get their 2019 season started on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at downtown Toronto’s De La Salle College.

The 1st Soccer team is off to a great start with a 3-1 pre-season record, and they are eager to showcase a fresh young squad that brings a wealth of global experience.

One of the new faces is midfielder Ali Abubakar Gharib '22, a native of Kenya, who becomes the second Football for Good (East Africa) scholar to join St. Andrew’s College. He joins wingback Geoffrey Ogenrwot ’21, who scored twice during the Saints’ U.S. tour that included a 5-0 win at Cleveland’s Gilmour Academy and a narrow 2-1 defeat at Catholic Prep (Erie, PA).

Also likely to see significant minutes is the Mexican connection of fearless defender Diego Velazquez ’22 (Puebla, MEX) and crafty left-footed midfielder Eduardo Kuri ’23 (Mexico City, MEX), who is already getting starting opportunities even though he turns just 14 years of age in December.

Through the middle of the park, SAC will rely heavily on Ian Hilgendorff '21, a native of Reading, England, who returns to Canada after spending a year with FC Dallas of Major League Soccer (MLS), and Ryan Purdy ’21, who was with the U19 squad of Spain’s Malaga City FC.

Another exciting part of the Saints Soccer youth movement is 15-year-old German midfielder/winger Jan Hofmeister ’22, who will bring his FSV Frankfurt academy experience to Canada.

This new group joins a solid roster that returns starters Ronan Woodroffe ’22 (GK), Owen Bradbury ’22 (MID), Cole Galata ’20 (FWD) and 2018 MVP and new captain Chris Marton ’20 (CB).

This new international flavour at St. Andrew’s College, looks to be the start of something very special on the soccer field.
