Varsity Cricket Saints smash records in huge win

The Varsity Saints Cricket squad put on a batting clinic Wednesday setting numerous records at our own “Gordon Ackerman” pitch, scoring a gargantuan total of 213 runs in only 25 overs against visiting TCS. Despite the unseasonably late-May cold, spitting weather, our boys dominated this match from start to finish. No doubt the pre-game processional down the Chapel steps under ominous tree canopy, as led by advanced piper and team-member Graham Stanley-Paul, was the key to this magical display.
Co-captain Ben van Eeden entered the arena #3, after only 4 balls bowled to help partner the total from 0 to 87, scoring an impressive 26 before having his stumps splayed apart from a cross-bat attempt. His partner, opener, and co-captain Mikey Bahen carried on with new partner Thomas Childerhose, who blasted his own home-run “6” before being bowled out for 17 and a new team total of 135.
In easily the greatest single batting performance by an Andrean in over a quarter of a century, our “home grown” Mikey B quietly smashed a massive 96 runs today against TCS’s dependably straight bowling attack.
In fact, he looked like he could have gone on to score 200 if not for one brave fielder intercepting an otherwise clear “4” with a most daring bare-handed catch from just inside the boundary (75 meters away) at “long-on”. Mikey left the field with the team total at 169. Along the way, twelve of his strikes rolled or bounced over the outfield boundary, and a further five sailed well beyond, scoring “6” each time.
Jacob Crocker and Warren “the younger” van Eeden each scored 14 runs to help push the Saints tally to 213 to end our 25-over innings (giving up 6 of 10 outs). This was the highest run total scored by any Andrean cricket team in the last 25 years. It was only surpassed once or twice back in the 1990s when matches were a full 10 overs (60 extra balls bowled) longer.
After the break, SAC began their bowling attack with five bowlers earning at least one wicket. Ben (2 wickets for 2 runs) and Mikey (2 wickets for 5 runs) led the assault, while newcomers Ujash Sharma (2 for 8) and Logan Nirenberski (1 for 2) took valuable wickets of their own. Martin Skachkov earned a “wicket maiden” in his first over. Jacob made the one team catch at "silly mid-on".
Four hours of game play resulted in a score of SAC 213 (for 6) vs. TCS 32 (all out).
Our final league game is this Friday at home vs. UCC. Come down to check out the fun after 12:30pm.
*Of note, in the last 20 years, the closest single game Andrean batting scores closest to Mikey’s were made by:
  • William White (2013) – 87 runs
  • Nitin Thakurani (2007) – 85 not out
  • Patrick Taylor (2015) - 82
  • Bobby Cave (2014) – 79 not out
