Holiday Hero makes Christmas brighter for 107 young people

The Holiday Hero gifts have left St. Andrew’s and will be delivered to 107 young people.
The School is supporting young people in the care of the York Region Children’s Aid Society (CAS) through our Holiday Hero program. These are young men and women between 15 and 21 years old who live on their own, reside in group homes, or are away at school and don’t have family to rely on.
Student advisory groups each selected a person to help based on their profile, then purchased gifts for them. The young people requested things like housewares, toiletries, clothing, pet food, and grocery gift cards. Boarding students even took a trip to a local shopping mall last month to buy presents for their Holiday Hero youth.
On Friday, CAS caseworkers were busy carting all the gifts that were being stored in the basement of the Memorial Chapel and loading them in trucks. For the record, they moved 207 bags and 54 boxes of presents!
This is the 12th year SAC has operated Holiday Hero under the direction of Melissa Tackaberry, Upper School math teacher. She said the School has raised more than $2 million for the program in total. This year alone, the Outreach Council collected more than $10,000 since October in support of Holiday Hero. For example, the proceeds from this week’s casual dress day will be directed toward the seasonal program.
For a third year the School is focusing on helping young people; prior to that, we helped support families, which are now being supported by the Salvation Army.
