CISAA Championship thriller for U16A Hockey Saints
In what may have been the most fun game our coaching staff has ever been a part of, your U16 Saints came from behind against first-place St. Michael's College to win the championship for the first time in years. The raucous SMC crowd was left in disbelief.
The Saints were down early after taking two penalties and giving SMC a 5-on-3 powerplay, but goals by Mat Aubie and Daniel Baldassara put us up 2-1.
After SMC scored two straight goals to take the lead, your Saints kept pressing. Christian Haggith flipped the switch and was flawless from this point forward, and Cole Galata buried a one-timer at the end of the second to tie the game 3-3 going into the intermission.
Once the ice was cleaned, the boys came out flying and took a quick 4-3 lead after a goal from Frankie Caragioiello. Then, with the lead, Jack Bar scored on an incredible end-to-end rush to put us ahead by two.
With SMC pressing, Bar then hit Galata with a long breakaway pass, and Galata faked out the goalie with a shifty move. While our bench was going nuts, you could hear a pin drop around the rest of the rink.
SMC scored one late to make it a 6-4 game, but the Saints held on and sacrificed their bodies to keep the puck away from the net. This was the kind of game that is impossible to forget, and we are so proud of the character our boys showed.
