Our Wind Ensemble, Middle School Concert Band, and Symphonic Band were all awarded gold today at the MusicFest Regionals, an SAC first.
“We are a force to be reckoned with,” said Sandi Chasson, SAC’s Music department head, following the performances.
Each band played three contracting pieces for the adjudicators at the MusicFest competition, held in Markham, Ont. And one by one, the musicians were awarded the gold standard.
“The boys are calling us a triple threat,” Ms. Chasson said.
First to play was the Wind Ensemble, which received a highly positive reaction from the adjudicator.
Then the Middle School Concert Band played their three pieces. Ms. Chasson describes these musicians as “phenomenal and energetic!”
Finally, with two golds already secured, the Symphonic Band was in the spotlight. Another gold for SAC, with the adjudicator remarking favourably on the boys’ striking uniforms.
Ms. Chasson said SAC bands have never received gold across the board at past regionals.
Altogether, 150 boys attended MusicFest Regionals, run by the Ontario Band Association. The bands have now qualified for the national competition. MusicFest Canada takes place May 14-19 at the University of Toronto, and brings together more than 10,000 of Canada’s finest young musicians who perform for recognition as the country’s foremost musical ensembles.
There are six levels of band play, with six being professional. Our Wind Ensemble is playing at level four, our Symphonic Band is playing at level two, and the Middle School Concert Band is playing at level 1.
“I’m so proud” of the boys, Ms. Chasson said. ‘Their heads are being held pretty high.”
