Alpine Ski Team qualifies for OFSAA

The Alpine ski team travelled to Craigleith Ski Club for the penultimate race of the CISAA season.

After a disappointing finish last week, the Level 2 Saints were eager to regroup and return to their winning ways at their second slalom race. The course was deceptively difficult, and many of the league's racers either DQ'd or did not finish one of their two runs. The Saints were remarkably consistent; however, as all but one of our racers were able to finish with very competitive times.

Hunter Appelbe once again led the charge with a simply amazing set of runs that secured him 2nd place overall (his best finish as a SAC racer). This finish, along with exceptional runs by Lucas (4th), and Ryan (7th) Henderson allowed the Saints to cruise to an easy victory, defeating the closest team by more than 10 spots. The win guaranteed an OFSAA birth for the team and 1st place in the league heading into the championships.

The Level 1 team, however, did not fare so well on the same course. Only 50 per cent of the racers finished both their runs today, and unfortunately, once again, the top-ranked skiers for the Saints struggled, falling in their runs.

Despite this, fantastic finishes by Alex Bordage (8th) and a personal best slalom finish by Inigo de la Macorra (10th) helped the team to finish 3rd on the day. While this finish dropped the team to 2nd place in the league heading into the finals, there is still an opportunity for them to win the championship provided that they have strong runs next week and win the final race.

Our U14 team worked well in practice on Monday and continued to improve as a whole. While their inexperience in slalom was evident today, many of the racers improved their finishes from last week and skied more confidently and aggressively. Francisco Pasquel earned the top spot finishing 15th today, followed by Roan Binnendyk (16th), and Jaxon Iatan (17th). The team finished 4th overall.
