Undermanned Saints seek miracle finish against UCC
Playing undermanned with students on trips and an illness going through the school, we faced off in a re-match with UCC Wednesday in the Bedard Gym. Missing five players in total, we were in a difficult position.
Nevertheless, your Saints battled hard and were up one after the first quarter, 16-15. Good execution and smart basketball made the basket seem huge, particularly for Owen Hollett who hit three 3's in the quarter.
The second quarter saw numerous adjustments and the pace of play slowed down as both teams turned to a zone defence. At the half, UCC was up two.
In the third UCC extended their lead to eight, and at one point subbed five players on and off against the gassed Saints.
Our second unit did a great job between the last minutes of the third and the start of the fourth and tying the game with five minutes left.
With two minutes remaining, UCC was up by two but couldn't finish an open look and your Saints went down with 40 seconds left and thanks to some great ball movement got an open look for Marcus McGowan who ...nailed a three-pointer with 25 seconds to play.
UCC then came down and hit a contested running floater to go up one with 5 seconds remaining.
Then came the controversy.
Great execution created a wide open look for Owen Hollett (already with 20 points) to win the game. Unfortunately, the first moving screen of the game was called with 1.6 seconds left on the clock dashing the miracle finish opportunity.
All in all, it was a great game by a depleted squad who showed real resilience and character.
