Business students apply mapping data to business ventures

Through an interdisciplinary partnership between geography and business, grade 12 McEwen Leadership students were treated to a special guest speaker and workshop this week.

David Joiner, Upper School Geography Department Head, is SAC’s resident ArcGIS software expert. His presentation and workshop focused on Esri’s Business Analyst Online, a geographic information system (GIS) for working with maps, and geographic information. It is used for creating and using maps, compiling geographic data, and analyzing mapped information for a wide range of applications.

In particular, the grade 12 McEwen Leadership students were learning how to apply ArcGIS information to their business venture plans in preparation for the upcoming McEwen Entrepreneurship Fair on December 11. At this event, students will present a presentation ‘pitch’ and display booth featuring their entrepreneurial venture ideas to a panel of judges and fellow St. Andrew’s business students.

In Dr. Joiner’s workshop, students used Esri Business Analyst Online, a web-based solution that makes custom site evaluation and market analysis fast and easy. Utilizing extensive demographic, consumer spending, and business data, Business Analyst Online provides detailed information and insights about consumers, their lifestyles and buying behaviour, and businesses in a specific market area.

Students will be able to:
  • Analyze trade areas, competition, supply and demand
  • Evaluate location sites
  • Determine population within a specific drive-time or distance
  • Identify and segment customers
Dr. Joiner’s grade 9 class joined in the fun and attended part of the workshop as well. The grade 12 students were able to practice pitching their product ideas to the grade 9s, and showed them the results of their market research.
