In their first league game of the season, your Saints battled hard Saturday, May 13 to nearly pull off a huge upset against a team that had spanked them a mere ten days previous (150 - 50).
Steamrolling behind two highly experienced and blisteringly fast Australian three-month exchange students, Trinity College School's bowling/fielding onslaught was relentless, pinning our 11 batters down for over two hours, with only Graham Stanley-Paul (10 runs) and co-captain Ben van Eeden (8) able to make any impact against. Alexander Smith, while scoring 1 run, managed with his straight bat to defend his way through a very useful 10 overs.
Entering the field with only 39 runs earned, our boys knew it would be a massive challenge to stem the visitors' handy bag of powerful stroke variations. Opening bowler, Ben, struggled to keep the bounce of his ball down, and was removed after only 12 balls bowled, but not before their opener (Ziln) had succumbed to one of his, forcing a clever catch behind by co-captain wicket keeper, Thomas Childerhose.
First-year, grade 8 member, Noah Jeppesen, proved in practice he was worthy of some bowling overs, and proceeded to deliver accurate but hitable balls that opposing batters struck hard into the air, only for Saint players (Sterling Cochran, co-captain Mikey Bahen, Alexander, and Ben) to make four more tremendous catches, stunning the rightly-confident TCS squad early in their innings.
Alexander made a pinpoint throw from Point to run-out their 6th batter, and Mikey earned a 7th wicket with an LBW (leg-before-wicket), leaving TCS needing 5 runs with only two batters left. Unfortunately, their 9th earned man-of-the-match award with two powerful strokes, which gave the visitors their second victory of the season, keeping them undefeated and atop the league table.
Alexander Smith earned our Man-of-the-Match Award, achieving a measure of success in all aspects of the game (bowling, fielding, and batting). Bravo and congrats, Zander!
