SASSAW ’22 an amazing experience for all
The SASSAW ’22 expedition has returned from a 14-day sea kayak trip in Clayoquot Sound, British Columbia.
Twelve intrepid students and two teachers paddled through beautiful, old-growth forest before stopping on Vargas Island to surf for two days. The group completed a 24-hour solo where they were alone on a beach with just a tarp, their thoughts, and minimal food.
The students were involved in all aspects of the running of the August trip: navigation, food prep and clean up, camp set up and tear down, boat loading and unloading, and, of course, sea kayaking.
For the service component of SASSAW (St. Andrew's Society for Service Around the World), the team collected flotsam and jetsam from all the beaches and campsites we visited and brought it back to Tofino to be recycled. During the trek, they saw seals, whales, porpoises, otters, bald eagles, bears, and even the rare coastal wolf. It was a beautiful and memorable trip.
Mr. Murray, Coordinator of Outdoor and Experiential Education, and Ms. Keating, faculty member and Flavelle Assistant Head of House, would like to congratulate all the boys for meeting the physical and mental challenges of the expedition. The SASSAW ’22 participants will make a presentation for Upper School in late September.
