SpringSmash gives back to the community

Just like in 2019, SpringSmash was delayed due to the risk of thunderstorms, giving students a few more days to look forward to the slate of sporting activities and treats.

The rain date of Monday, May 30, was picture perfect for the outdoor event. Some popular activities were truck pull, wrecking ball, the dunk tank, a waterslide, obstacle course, spike ball, and corn hole. Sporting events included ultimate frisbee, soccer, ball hockey, and football.

To keep the students hydrated, they were reminded to bring their water bottles to fill at the water station. There was a delicious barbecue lunch provided by Cole Hall staff and a tiki bar snack station, in keeping with the tropical theme of the day.

“The day went extremely well. All the boys enjoyed participating in the festival activities and sports events,” says David Guizzetti, Grade 12 McEwen Leadership student and SpringSmash CEO, which organizes and oversees the event.

In addition to the fun and games, the day marked the final push for donations in support of Jumpstart, which provides local children with the opportunity to participate in sports they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford.

“It’s safe to say that this year’s SpringSmash was a successful one not only because of the fulfillment of the day itself but because together, the SAC community raised over $34,000 for Jumpstart so that young kids in Aurora/Newmarket will have the opportunity to participate in sports.”

The McEwen students launched the fundraiser in April and organized weekly events to publicize the cause. Under the direction of Course Director, Sean Ludwig, the Grade 12 class runs SpringSmash like a corporation focused on procuring donations, offering athletic activities, and planning a fun wrap-up event featuring games and special events as incentives to participate.

This year, every $50 raised earned entries into the grand prize draw.

Fundraising in support of Jumpstart allows SAC students to give back to families in Aurora and Newmarket that don’t have the means to provide such opportunities. All funds raised go directly to the Aurora/Newmarket chapter of Jumpstart. Every $100 raised will give a child a chance to participate in a sport of their choice.

This year’s SpringSmash was presented by York1 and sponsored by Xiaoshan Wuchan Group, Capital Infrastructure, Highland GM, Pool Craft, and BMR Management.
