SASSAW 2022 participants prepare for their big trip

Over the May long weekend, 20 Grade 11 students and Mr. Murray and Ms. Keating stayed on the SAC campus while everyone else headed off for a break. This was the SASSAW pre-trip training weekend.

SASSAW is a challenging two- to three-week Leadership expedition option for Grade 11 students. The expedition has taken place in Canada for the last two years, but the hope is to travel internationally again in 2023.

The expedition this year will be travelling to Tofino, Vancouver Island, B.C., to complete a rigorous sea kayak expedition on the Pacific Ocean. In addition to learning how to sea kayak and navigate on the ocean, students will also learn about the Indigenous groups living in the area, the logging protests in Clayoquot Sound 30 years ago, how to surf, and how to be a better leader.

During the training weekend, students practiced setting up camp, cooking meals, had their swimming evaluation, created the menu for the two-week expedition, got lost (and then found), and began to make final decisions on their clothing and sleeping systems for the trip.

In September, the next crop of keen Grade 11 students will meet with Mr. Murray, Ms. Keating, and Mr. Shrimpton to discuss the SASSAW 2023 Expedition.
