Our grads are going places!

Many students in the Class of 2021 are staying in Ontario while others are venturing to other parts of Canada and south to the United States, and a few are heading across the pond.

According to the University Counselling office, the 117 members of the Class of 2021 received 444 offers of admission: 42 outside Ontario, 53 from the U.S., and 12 international. On average, there were 3.8 acceptances for each student.

We reached out to a few grads to tell us about applying to post-secondary institutions, and it appears that applying to multiple schools pays off.

Alex Ventin, this year's Head Prefect, applied to seven post-secondary institutions, all Canadian universities.

"I chose my top school based on level of academics, school culture, and sports teams," Alex says. "It was quite nerve-racking waiting for responses because there was nothing you could do after submitting the application. You would check your email every few days and hope you received an email titled, 'Your application status has changed,' and I would eagerly open it hoping to see some good news."

Alex will be attending Queen's University. "I loved the idea of going to a university town, having a great engineering program, knowing tons of guys that are older already there and having the opportunity to try out for their triathlon team caught my attention," he says.

"I am looking forward to a fresh start at a new school and the opportunity to meet a ton of new people. That is what is most exciting right now, and the future looks bright in terms of what the schools are expected to look like in September. That is very exciting for me, and I can't wait for another awesome opportunity."

Jinkai (Richard) Wu also got into his top choice and will be heading stateside to New York University for the fall. "It was very nerve-racking as my top choice, NYU, has been my top choice since when I was little," he says.

Just in case, Richard applied to a total of seven schools, withdrawing his applications for four of them and receiving early decision offers from the remaining three. Richard is looking forward to meeting new people and finding independence as he enters a new chapter.

Like Richard, Matheen Khan chose his top university choices, looking toward independence and a new experience in residence. Matheen applied to six schools and accepted an early offer to the dual degree program at Wilfrid Laurier and Waterloo universities for business administration and financial mathematics.

Yijie (Bryan) An covered all his bases and applied to 11 schools, three in Canada and eight in the U.S. "My top choice is the University of Chicago for physics, which I was luckily accepted into."

Bryan was familiar with the school, which made it his top choice. "I went there two summers ago for a summer program, and I enjoyed the academic environment and resources there."

Bryan adds he is looking forward to a new set of challenges as he leaves behind SAC.

The graduating class received more than $1.3 million in scholarships and awards toward their post-secondary education, and 92 per cent graduated as Ontario Scholars.
