SAC AP Chemistry students accept the University of Waterloo challenge

AP chemistry students tested their chemistry skills and knowledge along with other high school students across Canada and worldwide.

Students competed in these challenging contests online this year during two days of exams, which were cancelled last year due to the pandemic.

The Chem 13 News and Avogadro Exams are challenging online exams written by more than 6,000 Grade 11 and 12 chemistry students every May and consist of 40 multiple choice questions written in a 75-minute exam period.

The Chem 13 News Exam is designed for Grade 12 high school chemistry students in their second high school chemistry course. Topics include organic chemistry, equilibria, kinetics, oxidation-reduction, bonding, structure, reactions, solutions, and gases. This exam took place Thursday, May 13.

Congratulations to our top writer, Zain Salman, Grade 11, who was in the 88th percentile in a field of 681 exam writers from around the world.

The Avogadro Exam is designed for Grade 11 high school students in their first high school chemistry course. Topics include structure of matter, bonding, reactions, solutions, and gases. The test includes a few probing and demanding questions on some of the main high school chemistry topics. This exam took place Thursday, May 20.

Congratulations to our top writer, Kai Kang, Grade 10, who was in the 80th percentile in a field of 2,974 exam writers from around the world.

The exams are hosted by the University of Waterloo Department of Chemistry as part of its community outreach.

“Historically, SAC students have done very well, placing near the top among thousands of entrants,” says Marke Jones, Head of Science.
