Middle School students connect with local senior homes

Grade 8 students have been creating weekly videos to send to 11 local senior residences that partner with the School. Each video is an edited compilation of student submissions that can be anything from a song on the piano to tricks their dog is learning.

This initiative is a part of the Avant-Garde Wednesday programming in the Middle School. Each week, Faculty & Arts Coordinator, Randi Berman meets with a few Middle School advisory groups and goes over the plan for the video. "Typically we go out in the community, but this year we have been doing projects at home and school to stay connected to the organizations in our community," says Randi.

The response from the homes has been overwhelming; the residents thoroughly enjoy seeing what the students are up to, even though it’s over a screen for the time being. "They are quite isolated and love seeing what our students are up to," Randi adds.

The videos are also sent to parents in the weekly A Look Ahead newsletter. "We continue to be impressed by the supportive words, interesting talents, and overall participation our Middle School students showcase weekly to our senior residents. We have received several positive emails from our local long-term care facilities thanking our students for bringing a smile to the residents’ faces," says Sabrina D’Angelo, Assistant Head of School and Director of Middle School, Diversity & Inclusion.
