SAC's Harvard Model UN team prevails at virtual conference

This past weekend, 16 students from St. Andrew's participated in the 2021 Harvard Model United Nations Conference, which was held virtually over Zoom.

The conference lasted from Thursday, Jan. 28 to Sunday, Jan. 31, and featured up to five hours of writing and Zooming per night. The St. Andrew's delegation has attended HMUN annually since 2014.

This year at HMUN, the boys represented Portugal and Azerbaijan in a variety of General Assembly and regional body committees. Topics spanned from decolonization and the global economy to fracking and climate change. For some, this was their first experience speaking in front of hundreds of people.

Despite participating virtually for the first time, the St. Andrew's delegation found great success in debate. Using breakout rooms, Google Docs, and various other online tools, the boys crafted extensive resolutions to be presented to their committees and voted on. Collaborating with like-minded students from all over the globe, the boys built meaningful relationships and worked toward meaningful change.

A huge congratulations to David Buckley and Leo Shao, who won Outstanding Delegate Awards in their respective committees. This form of recognition is reserved for the strongest performers at the conference and, given the size of HMUN, is a tremendous accomplishment.
