SAC teacher, summit reacher, Mr. Murray aims high

One of our faculty members is climbing to new heights at a Toronto college.

Seneca has written an article detailing the climbing exploits of Angus Murray, our Outdoor and Experiential Education (OEE) Coordinator. Mr. Murray’s other role at SAC is Security and Risk Management Supervisor. Currently, he is enrolled at Seneca College, working toward his Canadian Risk Managers designation.

The article, titled Seneca climber on track to complete the Seven Summits, details Mr. Murray’s love of everything outdoors, especially cold-weather pursuits such as dog-sledding, skiing, and ice-climbing. He tells of his first big climb in 1998, on Canada’s tallest mountain, Mount Logan. His successful ascent of Mount Everest in 2008 made him the 50th Canadian to reach the world's tallest peak.

There is only one summit he has yet to conquer: Mount Aconcagua in Argentina.

Mr. Murray started leading expeditions 30 years ago and joked that he’s spent more than 3,000 days total heading up trips for other thrill-seekers.

At SAC, Mr. Murray has been busy contributing to existing outdoor programs and creating new ones. He added a four-day out trip to the Grade 10 Outdoor Leadership course and hopes to be paddling to the Arctic Ocean with the SASSAW team next summer.

This year, he started teaching OEE courses in the Middle School with Ms. O’Hare on Avant-Garde Wednesday. He initiated a mountain bike team in the Upper School last year that has started expanding and improving the trail network on campus.

For Mr. Murray, the pandemic has highlighted the value and potential of SAC’s 126-acre campus, one of the School’s greatest assets.  There is so much that students are doing, and can do, right here on campus. Tobogganing, skiing, and snowshoeing are all happening this week just outside the walls of our classrooms.
