SASSAW team sets sights on Arctic destination
The 2021 SASSAW team is off to a great start.
In September, a destination was finalized by Courtenay Shrimpton, Assistant Head of School, Dr. Joiner, Canadian and World Studies Department Head, and Angus Murray, Outdoor and Experiential Education Coordinator. They settled on a location closer to home to ensure a positive experience for both the students and the community they will visit while being mindful of the potential pandemic travel restrictions.
The chosen destination is the Arctic coast of Ontario.
The ten students will be led by Angus Murray and Kevin Gate, Upper School science teacher and Assistant Head of Memorial House. The team will paddle 300 kilometres north on the Missinaibi River from the Trans-Canada Highway to James Bay. The canoe trip will allow them to do service and cultural activities along the way as they travel through the traditional lands of the James Bay Cree. The journey will end at Moose Factory, the oldest town in Ontario, established in 1673.
The team had its first training day on Oct. 9 on campus. They climbed, cooked, built fires, and surveyed the route they would be taking. The participants meet every two to three weeks outdoors as they learn about the history of the region they will be visiting.
SASSAW stands for St. Andrew’s Society for Service Around the World, and the program gives students an opportunity to do community service on a global scale. The SASSAW trips take place during the summer and have included such destinations as South Africa, Peru, Thailand, Kenya, Ecuador, Malawi, Namibia, Brazil, Kenya, India, Chile, Costa Rica, and Fiji.
The upcoming trip might be closer to home, but the students will gain a greater appreciation for the advantages they have; engage in physical challenges and cultivate a spirit of adventure and discovery: and learn the story of the local people and gain some understanding of the significance of the local experience.
The continuation of the SASSAW trip is an example of how SAC continues to provide as many co-curricular activities as possible during the pandemic, in as safe a manner as possible.
