CISAA Curling Championships: Double gold for Boys and Open teams

It was an exciting day on Toronto's Donalda Club curling sheets Friday, March 1.

The Boys Division team began the day with a morning elimination semi-final game against Bayview Glen Independent School (BVG). Your Saints read the ice well and stole the first end with three points to take a lead that they never relinquished.

Highlights included well-needed takeouts by all team members in a competitive game that was 4-2 in SAC's favour after the fourth end. The boys in red earned another three points in the fifth end, and BVG shook hands to concede the game part-way through the final end when the Saints took the game out of reach. Final score: SAC 7 - BVG 2.

Advancing to the CISAA Boys championship game in the afternoon, your Saints' growing confidence on the ice was to their advantage against an experienced Havergal College team that had finished first in the regular season. SAC yielded two points to Havergal in the first end, but the Saints came back to take all the remaining ends in the game. With one point in the second, two points in the third, one point in the fourth, and two points in the fifth, the team incrementally pulled ahead of their opponents. Havergal conceded the game when their fifth stone in the final end went out of play. Final score: SAC 6 - Havergal 2.

Congratulations to your CISAA Boys Division Champions: skip, Jacob Crocker, vice-skip, William Le Boeuf, second, Mike Chen, lead, John Hou, and alternate, Axel Ravera.

The Open Division team earned their way directly into the afternoon final game with a page-playoff win over Toronto French School's b-team last week. TFS(b) won their semi-final match against Toronto Montessori Schools in the morning, qualifying for a rematch against SAC for the Open Division championship. Well-placed lead guards and draws, point-earning second's draws into the house, and takeouts and sound strategy by the vice-skip and skip took SAC to a half-time 6-0 lead after the third end.

Although TFS(b) clawed back with three points in the next two ends, the Saints sealed the game with a shot rock in the sixth end hidden behind a crowd of stones at the front of the rings. Final score: SAC 7 - TFS(b) 3

Congratulations to your CISAA Open Division Champions: skip, Nova Schmidt, vice-skip, Nick Cruickshanks, second, Colby Jackson, lead, Eddie Hao, and alternate, Thomas Raeburn.

This is the first double gold championship since the 2013-2014 curling season.

The St. Andrew's College Curling program would like to thank the Bradford Curling Club for its tremendous support of our students over the season. Special thanks are extended to Bill Bennett for his many hours of coaching time on the ice with the boys. The encouragement of parents both at the rinks and at home is greatly appreciated, as are the efforts of Jane Bedard, SAC facilities coordinator, for arranging transportation on our many trips to the rinks.

The two CISAA championship plaques in the skips' hands and the many smiles in the following image say it all. Well done, curlers!
