Gary West Hockey Tournament lined up for January 18-20

The Gary West Sr. Boys Hockey Tournament has eight teams set to battle it out for a third year.

St. Andrew’s Varsity B team will host the tournament January 18 to 20. The tourney is named in honour of a prominent Andrean, Gary West, a teacher at St. Andrew’s College for 33 years, starting in 1963. Mr. West was Athletic Director from 1965 until his retirement.

This year’s guest teams are:

St. Edward High School, Lakewood, Ohio
Gilmour Academy, Gates Mills, Ohio
The Kiski School, Saltsburg, Pennsylvania
St. Charles College, Sudbury, Ontario
Everest Academy, Vaughan, Ontario
King City Secondary School, King City, Ontario
Upper Canada College, Toronto, Ontario

St. Charles is making its debut in the Gary West tourney, but was a familiar team at the MacPherson Hockey Tournament in decades past. In fact, St. Charles won gold medals in 1991, 1992, 1997, and 2000; earned silver in 1990; and took home bronze in 1994 and 1995.

The teams are divided into two divisions, Kinney and Foy, named after former Andreans.

Ron Kinney taught Science at St. Andrew's College from 1965 until 1999 and was Head of the Science Department from 1989 until his retirement. He was heavily involved in the SAC hockey program, coaching many teams over the years, including First Hockey. Mr. Kinney passed away in April 2004.

Aubrey Foy started at St. Andrew’s in 1976 as Head of Music and was Housemaster of Flavelle for 17 years. He is also credited with reviving the Pipe & Drum Corps. Mr. Foy held the position of Head of Admission when he retired after 27 years at SAC. He passed away in 2003.

Tournament namesake Gary West is scheduled to take part in the ceremonial puck-drop at the Friday evening game at the La Brier Family Arena. Most games will be played at the La Brier Family Arena, with a couple of the Friday morning and afternoon games being hosted nearby at the Aurora Community Centre and the Magna Centre in Newmarket.

The Gary West Cup will be presented to the Championship team, along with a “keeper” banner. The Cup resides at St. Andrew’s College year round. In addition, a six-member all-star team will be selected to recognize outstanding tournament play. Plaques will be awarded to three forwards, two defensemen, and one goaltender.

The tournament coincides with the Martin Luther King holiday weekend in the United States, a consideration for teams travelling from south of the border.
