St. Andrew’s in the spotlight on Rogers Hometown Hockey

Rogers Hometown Hockey made its stop in Aurora and as a community partner for nearly a century, St. Andrew’s students participated in all the program had offered.

Our commitment to the programming started in the summer when faculty and staff formed a team to inspire the Hometown Hockey tour to join us at St. Andrew’s. What evolved was a wonderful feature on the School’s Hockey program, a panel presentation to grade 11 students, a community clean-up, and our younger hockey players joining a ball hockey game.

When a film crew arrived on campus mid-November, we didn’t know exactly what would transpire, but the interviews with Headmaster Kevin McHenry, Varsity Hockey Saints Head Coach David Manning, and members of the First Hockey team highlighted the wonder of St. Andrew’s College. The result was a five-minute feature that aired during the first intermission of the Sunday evening NHL game.

The video focuses not only on the success of our hockey program, but on how David Manning, a business studies and computer science teacher, built an already great program into a "powerhouse."

On Friday afternoon, four production members of the tour came by the School for a Q&A with grade 11 students and interviews with our Broadcast Journalism course. The crew answered questions from how their university degree applied to their current work to how their love of sport influenced their career choices – a lot of food for thought for our students!

In addition to participating in the team parade on Sunday, grade 11 student Cael Cavallin sat on the panel with Sportsnet hosts Tara Slone and Ron MacLean. You can watch the portion of his interview here.

Hometown Hockey brings fans a personal and interactive experience as it makes stops across Canada during the NHL hockey season. Aurora was one of the 24 communities chosen this season as a place where hockey is celebrated. In addition to the video highlighting the SAC Hockey program, Sportsnet also produced a shorter video on Connor McDavid, captain of the Edmonton Oilers, and Curtis Joseph, hockey coach and former Toronto Maple Leafs goalie. Check out the aerial view of the campus in the opening frames!

Did you know Connor McDavid is a campus regular during the off season? He trains with Gary Roberts and his High Performance Training program in the La Brier Family Arena along with other hockey players such as Steven Stamkos (Tampa Bay Lightning), Mark Scheifele (Winnipeg Jets), Phil Kessel (Pittsburgh Penguins), and Old Boy Warren Foegele ’14 (Carolina Hurricanes).
