Arts/Co-curricular Plus showcase highlights amazing activities offered at SAC
From singing to soup, the boys of St. Andrew’s were treated to a showcase of the varied offerings of our new Arts/Co-curricular Plus program.
This after-school option for Upper School boys allows them to pursue their passions and it was wildly popular in Session 1. Nearly 400 Upper School boys signed up for programs ranging from culinary skills and ceramics, to DECA and Model UN, to robotics and Guitar Club.
Boys in the creative writing option took to the stage in Ketchum Auditorium first, reading selections from their written works. Next up was a fun display put on by boys in debating and public speaking. Their topic, “This House would ban Santa,” generated a lot of passion from audience members, who clearly fell on the side of never banning Santa!
Major Brian McCue introduced Noah Jeppesen and the pair performed a competition drumming piece in perfect unison. Intro to Drumming is also being offered in Session 2.
Boys in the Model United Nations presented a mock committee session before the Guitar Club filed on stage. The beginners played a well-received rendition of Ed Sheeran’s Wish You Were Here, the enthusiastic audience waving their arms and phones to the beat. The more experienced members of the Guitar Club followed up with their take on Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd.
Melissa Tackaberry, ACPlus Co-ordinator, introduced the boys to the new offerings in the second session, which include:
Jazz, Blues, Rock Improvisation
Beginning the Bagpipes
Scottish Country Dancing
1 Minute Film (digital short films)
Digital Rendering Fundamentals
Intro to Nutrition
The boys were dismissed from the auditorium and headed to Staunton Gallery where they learned more about some of the ACPlus offerings such as ceramics, plein air painting, and robotics. They also lined up for a taste of the chicken noodle soup made by the culinary arts students and enjoyed a performance by the a cappella group, who performed Sweet Caroline, Eight Days a Week, and Lots of Fish in Bonsavist’ Harbour.
Session 2 of ACPlus starts this week on Thursday, Dec. 6.
