The St. Andrew’s College Archives hosted 13 members of the Association of Independent Archivists on Friday, May 25. This was an opportunity to connect with fellow archivists from St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School, Havergal College, The Mabin School, Appleby College, Bayview Glen, Montcrest School, Trinity College School, Royal St. George’s College, and The York School.
The guests started the day with a school tour led by SAC students Michael Hanrahan (grade 10, Jake Kim (grade 11), and Joshua Osborne (grade 11).
“Your school campus is absolutely beautiful, to boot!” remarked Joanne Chmara, volunteer for the Mabin School Archives.
The meeting took place in the Archives meeting room where each picture and artifact represents a piece of our School’s history and tradition. This backdrop served as an ideal setting for this gathering where we had an in-depth discussion on the topic of Let’s Get Digital, led by guest speaker Emily Sommers, a digital archivist at the University of Toronto Archives.
Digital preservation is a hot topic in the archives community because digital records happen to be particularly difficult to protect and control due to the malleability of technology and the challenge of controlling accessibility. Emily provided information about various tools and resources we can look into as potential digital preservation techniques for archives, big and small.
We look forward to meeting again next fall with this group, which is dedicated to capturing and preserving physical and digital evidence of our schools’ culture and history.
