Varsity and Jr. Golf with strong start to the season
Lake Ontario was angry this day, as your intrepid SAC golfers made their way to Niagara Falls to compete in their first tournament of the year, a scramble at Legends of Niagara.
Austin Brett, who has a keen eye for numbers, had some interest in the Casino but Coach Ramon was quick to reminded him that he had business to attend to. AB, as he is known in the golf circles, certainly understood. Self-imposed Varsity Captain Will "Bill" McHenry slept for the entire trip to Niagara in order to fully prepare for the day. In short, the Varsity lads were ready.
Were they as ready at the U16 golfers? Perhaps, but I think not! Caden McHenry (younger brother to Bill) reviewed the course on his Fujitsu; Hunter Kolm got fired up by listening to his favourite artist, P-Diddy, and Chris Yi worked on his mental game by playing virtual Chess and Sodoku. In the end, the Mini-Coach bus was alive and well with excited golfers.
It rained all day, providing for some challenging conditions. Coach Ramon and I saw a coyote the size of a small house, and after I returned to the golf cart from my hiding place, we were able to drive away unharmed. The boys played very well despite having to battle the weather.
The Varsity team ended the day in 5th place overall, but the Top 5 teams were all separated by one stroke each, so it promises to be a very entertaining and competitive Varsity field this year.
The Junior team, playing in a competitive field of their own, came out on top with a 1st place finish to start the year! Troy Tsai and Hunter Kolm shot the low round of the day at 67! Overall, it was a great start to the year and we look forward to the next few tournaments.
