Warnings of severe thunderstorms forced SpringSmash to be rescheduled to perhaps the nicest day of 2019 so far. The ‘rain date’ of Monday, May 27, turned out to be a perfect day of 20 degrees and sunny skies giving SpringSmash more of a mid-summer feel.
The entire school was active and involved in a fun-filled day of sporting activities such as flag football, basketball, road hockey, ultimate, soccer, and tchoukball. Some new additions to the fun this year included spikeball, a spray-tank, mechanical bull, tricycle race, and a treat trifecta of snowcones, soft serve ice cream, and cotton candy.
Dining staff set up an amazing barbecue lunch outside the La Brier Family Arena and the boys were quick to jump on the menu of pulled pork sandwiches, burgers, and veggies.
In addition to the fun and games, the day marked the final push for donations in support of Jumpstart, which provides local children the opportunity to participate in sports they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford.
As a student body, SAC came together in support of the Jumpstart cause, and ensured that 330 kids in Aurora and Newmarket this year get the opportunity to participate in sport. Collectively, the St. Andrew’s College community raised over $33,000 for the Jumpstart charity.
SpringSmash is an initiative of the grade 12 McEwen Leadership program, who launched the fundraiser back in April and organized weekly events to publicize the cause. Under the direction of course director Sean Ludwig, the class runs SpringSmash like a corporation focused on procuring donations, offering athletic activities, and planning a fun wrap-up event featuring games and special events as incentives to participate.
This year, every $50 raised earned entries into the grand prize draw. Congratulations to the winners of the following raffle prizes:
- HyperX Headphones – Andy Yang
- Connor McDavid toaster – Roy Huang
- Signed Jonathan Toews jersey – Chris Seguin Bianchi
And finally, after tallying up the results of all the sports competitions from the SpringSmash event, the ninth annual SpringSmash Championship goes to Douglas Clan in the Middle School Clan and Flavelle House in the Upper School.
