No matter the age everyone enjoys a good story. Especially when it is told by someone who has mastered the art of storytelling.
Dan Robson, senior writer and head of features at The Athletic, has certainly mastered that art and on Tuesday he visited with the grade 9s to share some stories and tips as they begin working on their summative projects profiling one another.
Before working for The Athletic, Dan was a senior writer at Sportsnet magazine and Sportsnet.ca. He is also the author of Quinn: The Life of a Hockey Legend, and Bower: A Legendary Life. He is also the co-author of The Crazy Game, with Clint Malarchuk; Change Up, with Buck Martinez; and Killer, with Doug Gilmour.
The students were all-ears as Dan listed the high-profile athletes he has worked with throughout his career such as Doug Gilmour, Alex Ovechkin, and Mitch Marner just to name a few. His work tends to focus more on the characters of the sport and not so much the numbers and game statistics that are used by so many to define the athletes.
For that reason, Dan was a choice to speak to the boys about their upcoming project. The grade 9 students are tasked with profiling each other in a way that tells a story. He encouraged the boys to really prepare for each interview, create a natural conversational environment, and look deeper than just the surface when searching for the story they would like to tell.
