An abundance of snow and cancelled buses did not stop the bands of St. Andrew’s from competing in MusicFest Regionals.
The boys had dedicated many hours to practicing for this competition and Director of Music, Sandi Chasson, could not let that go to waste. So instead of travelling to Le Parc Tuesday, Feb. 12, Sandi jumped into action and arranged for an adjudicator to come to SAC Wednesday evening to judge the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble – right down to picking up Dr. Karen Fannin of the University of Nebraska at her hotel.
“Dr. Fannin was more than impressed,” said Sandi, who was thrilled that all of the boys’ hard work paid off. “With our parents listening, both bands performed better than ever!”
It was another round of outstanding results for SAC’s finest musicians. The Symphonic Band, under the baton of Eric McMillian, was awarded a Silver Plus rating and The Rising Star Award for best up-and-coming band in the Ontario Band Association (OBA) Festival.
The Wind Ensemble earned the prestigious Gold Award. “They were on fire and the music was electric,” beamed Sandi. “There are moments when everything just clicks, and Wednesday night was one of those moments.”
During Friday night’s Music Director Social, they were also presented with the Overall Outstanding Performance Award, which ranks them as the top band in the OBA Festival of more than 300 bands.
“I am extremely happy that the boys had the opportunity to perform,” said Headmaster Kevin McHenry. “The results are fantastic, and I congratulate the boys and our talented music faculty on a job well done!”
Both bands qualified for MusicFest Nationals happening May 13-18 in Ottawa, where thousands of the country’s most talented young musicians compete.
Instead, the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will head to Chicago April 10-14 to compete in the WorldStrides Music Festival alongside bands from across the U.S. and Canada. Ms Chasson says the boys’ musical energies will be used to work on the repertoire for this festival, therefore St. Andrew’s will not participate in MusicFest Nationals this year.
