The 1st Rugby Saints competed in the St. Maximilian Kolbe CHS Tournament on April 13, and put together three truly excellent games of rugby.
The first was a battle royale against last year's OFSAA semi-finalist, Nantyr Shores SS. They were an amazing team of tough, hard-hitting, and hard-running athletes who knew the game of rugby well. We were less experienced but demonstrated excellent play-making and ball movement... although we needed to work on ball retention in contact and avoiding penalties at the breakdown.
The second match was a defensive battle. Again we struggled with retention and penalties, but our defence was amazing, three times stopping St. Max at the 5m line. Kudos to St. Max who had the better chances and probably should have won... but good defence usually wins in the end! A try as time expired makes the gap seem bigger than it was and we look forward to seeing St. Max at CAIS next week.
The final match was where it all came together for your Saints. We retained the ball, we stopped taking penalties, and at one point defended 12 consecutive phases giving up only 10m of territory. Our opponents were amazing: tough, great tacklers and runners that never quit, displaying some of the most friendly and sporting attitudes of the day despite the eventual runaway score. True rugby players. Your Saints simply fired on all cylinders.
