The Centre for Learning and Teaching (CLT) at St. Andrew’s College provides a variety of programs and resources designed to promote student learning and improve instruction. The program is based out of Towers Library. There are five programs, unique to St. Andrew’s, that are run out of the CLT:
Guided Learning Centre (GLC)
Students who do not finish assignments by the assigned deadline are required to attend the GLC after school and are given guidance and time to complete their work. The GLC also provides teachers with support for students who miss in-class assessments and evaluations because of co-curricular commitments or illness. The Middle School GLC program meets in the Middle School Resource Room (R106) on the following days:
Mondays and Fridays – 3:30 to 4:45 p.m.
Wednesdays – 1:30 to 2:45 p.m.
GLC Plus
Similar to the GLC program, the GLC Plus program is designed to help students who have difficulty managing their school work. The difference between the GLC and GLC Plus programs is that instead of permanently pulling these students from their co-curricular activities, which can be detrimental to the St. Andrew’s experience, the GLC Plus students are assigned to a weekly, one hour GLC session. At these weekly sessions, teachers work with the students to organize and prioritize their school work, thus helping them to better manage their academic portfolio. The Middle School GLC Plus program meets in the Middle School Resource Room (R106) on the following days:
Mondays and Fridays – 3:30 to 4:45 p.m.
Wednesdays – 1:30 to 2:45 p.m.
Writing Centre
The Writing Centre is a branch of the library that provides classes, tutorials, workshops and individual consultations to help students develop effective writing and research skills. Additionally, the Writing Centre actively promotes literacy across the curriculum and excellence in writing by producing the student newspaper, the student literary magazine, promoting a speaker’s series, and providing writing workshops in both individual and group settings. Middle School students wishing to take advantage of the Writing Centre should meet with Mrs. Rose-Donahoe in Towers Library.
ESL Plus
The ESL Plus program is designed to help students whose first language is not English and who have already completed the ESL program at St. Andrew's, or who are taking both the ESL and regular English program. Many of these students often need ESL support until the end of grade 12 to further develop their English language skills; this is especially true with writing and speaking skills. This program runs on Mondays after school, under the supervision of the school’s ESL teacher and two other staff facilitators. Middle School students wishing to take advantage of the ESL Plus program should meet with Mrs. Pries in Towers Library.
Math Centre
The importance of mathematics in virtually every university discipline makes it essential that we provide students with a strong foundation. The Math Centre is designed to assist those students who struggle with mathematics through individual and small group tutorial sessions. The program is facilitated by a University of Waterloo co-operative education student who is currently undertaking a degree in mathematics, and is supervised by the staff of the CLT. Middle School students wishing to take advantage of the Math Centre should meet with Ms. Thorne in Towers Library.
Learning Resource Services
This is the designated office at St. Andrew’s that maintains the records of students with learning exceptionalities, certifies eligibility for services, determines reasonable accommodations, and develops plans for the provision of accommodations for students. For more information regarding the accommodations currently offered to students with learning exceptionalities, please contact Amanda Thorne, the school’s Learning Resource Specialist, at (905) 727-3178 Ext. 236 or by email at amanda.thorne@sac.on.ca.
Tutoring
Students who feel that they require additional assistance in an academic subject, or who would benefit from an “academic coach” may opt to request a tutor; tutors may be senior students or tutors engaged from outside the school community. All requests for tutoring should be made through Amanda Thorne at (905) 727-3178 Ext. 236 or by email at amanda.thorne@sac.on.ca.
