Make way MacPherson, there’s a new hockey tournament at St. Andrew’s.
The Gary West Senior Boys Hockey Tournament is set to run Friday, Jan. 13 to Sunday, Jan. 15. The majority of the games will be played at the La Brier Family Arena. The tournament has been established to help build a more robust Varsity B Hockey program, similar to what the Annual MacPherson Hockey Tournament does at the Varsity level.
And like MacPherson, the new tournament is named in honour of a prominent Andrean. Gary West taught at St. Andrew’s College for 33 years, juggling multiple responsibilities as a teacher, coach, and Athletic Director.
“Gary was highly respected and well-liked; I think you’d be hard pressed to hear a negative comment about him,” says Greg Reid, Assistant Headmaster and Assistant Coach of the Varsity B Hockey team. Mr. Reid has been working since last year to get this weekend’s inaugural tournament off the ground.
Unfortunately, Gary and his wife, Wilma, are on vacation, so puck-drop duties at the opening ceremonies at the 7 p.m. game on Friday will go to their three children, Rachel, Bruce, and Lynda. “But they have promised to try and keep this weekend open in coming years,” says Mr. Reid.
The Gary West Tournament has been purposely scheduled in January to coincide with the Martin Luther King holiday weekend in the United States, a consideration for teams travelling from south of the border. This year there will be six teams including St. Andrew’s; The Kiski School, Saltsburg, Pa; Gilmour Academy, Gates Mills, Ohio; Collège Jean–Eudes and Lower Canada College, Montreal, Que.; and King City Secondary School.
Looking ahead to 2018, the tournament will grow to an eight-team format. Seven teams have already committed. It will also have two divisions, Foy and Kinney. The divisions have been named after prominent Andreans Aubrey Foy and Ron Kinney, both long-term faculty members.
