Mathematics

Grade 5

This course is part of our accelerated mathematics program in the Middle School. The course is based upon the Ministry of Education’s Ontario Curriculum - Grade 5 Mathematics. As such, the following five strands are studied: number sense and numeration, measurement, geometry and spatial sense, patterning and algebra, along with probability and data management. As an accelerated program, students will be introduced to several grade 6 concepts. The course uses a variety of teaching strategies to develop students’ numeracy. Spirit of Math drills are used to develop students’ mathematical operational skills, while the use of web-based mathematics programs is part of the course work. Students will be required to use binders and a textbook as the primary tools for in-class work and homework. Students’ homework will be accompanied by a student workbook and journal. A number of culminating performance tasks that reflect real-life mathematics applications complete the learning for these students.

Grade 6

This course is part of our accelerated mathematics program in the Middle School. The course is based upon the Ministry of Education’s Ontario Curriculum - Grade 6 Mathematics. As such, the five strands of number sense and numeration, measurement, geometry and spatial sense, patterning and algebra, along with probability and data management are covered. As an accelerated program, students will be introduced to several grade 7 concepts. The course uses a variety of teaching strategies to develop student numeracy. Spirit of Math drills are used to develop students’ mathematical operational skills, while the use of web-based mathematics programs is an integral part of the course work. Students will be required to use their school laptop as a primary tool for in-class work and homework. Journal writing as well as a number of culminating performance tasks that reflect real-life mathematics applications supplement the learning for the students.

Grade 7

This course continues our accelerated mathematics program in the Middle School and is based upon the Ministry of Education’s Ontario Curriculum - Grade 8 Mathematics. The five strands covered are number sense and numeration, measurement, geometry and spatial sense, patterning and algebra, as well as probability and data management. Emphasis will be placed on developing students’ numeracy and problem-solving skills. Mathletics, a web-based mathematics program, is an integral part of the course and allows students to practice concepts through the use of technology. To create relevancy, effort is made to apply all mathematics skills to real-life situations.

Grade 8

In the grade 8 year of our Middle School accelerated mathematics program, the students complete the grade 9 academic course, MPM1D, as laid out in the Ontario Curriculum, Grades 9 and 10 Mathematics. The course is divided into four strands: number sense and algebra, linear relations, analytic geometry, and measurement and geometry. To support students in the accelerated program, especially those who enter it in grade 8, skills are strengthened with supplementary activities, many of which involve technology such as the computer programs Green Globs, Geometer's Sketchpad, Google SketchUp, and CASIO ClassPad Manager. We also use the web-based tutorial program, Mathletics, to which we have subscribed. Learning activities, performance tasks, and major tests include the four categories of achievement: knowledge/understanding, thinking/inquiry, communication, and application.
