Geography Class Verifies Cross-Country Distances

Course lengths for today’s school-wide cross-country run have been verified after the newly renovated upper fields altered the run’s traditional route.
On Monday during period 3, Dr. David Joiner’s grade 11-12 Geomatics class went for a walk with GPS receivers in hand to determine the total distance of this year’s cross-country run and to reinforce their skills at downloading GPS tracks into Google Earth.
The walk took about 45 minutes on a beautiful sunny afternoon, following a map route obtained from Athletic Director Paul Bedard. The students separated near the end of the walk so they could record the routes of both the Upper School and Middle School. The Upper School and Middle School routes were approximately 3.2 km and 2.5 km, respectively.
Once back in class, the students transferred their GPS tracks and waypoints into Google Earth and experimented with creating animated tours of their route and showing the elevation profile of their walk. Maps of the 2012 route were shared with the rest of the School prior to the annual cross-country run.
Congratulations to Jack McDonald, grade 12 student from Flavelle House who came in first for the US run with a time of 11:23.97, and to Conor Woodroffe, a grade 8 student from Douglas Clan who won the MS race with a time of 9:14.07.
