SAC Celebrates an Amazing Year

It’s been another banner year for St. Andrew’s College, consisting of a student body that included 593 boys in grades 6-12 with 330 day students and 263 boarding students from across Canada and 25 countries worldwide.
The 113th Prize Day celebrations took place last Thursday and Friday for Middle School and Upper School respectively. Both ceremonies are available for viewing at: www.sac.on.ca/live.

Though it was sad to say farewell to the 113 members of the Class of 2012, they leave us well-prepared for the new challenges that lie ahead and connected through the School’s 6,000-strong Old Boy alumni network.
Our grads received 444 offers of admission, 125 from outside Ontario and the others from universities in Canada, the U.S. and around the world. On average there were 3.9 acceptances for each student. The graduating class received more than $716,550 in scholarships and awards toward their post-secondary education, and 78% graduated as Ontario Scholars. In his Prize Day speech, valedictorian and Head Prefect Dylan Hussey ’12 said his four years at St. Andrew's have been all about brotherhood. "Relationships like these are few and far between in the world today. These relationships are from living together, learning together, and fighting together on the sports fields."
Headmaster Kevin McHenry spoke of School’s many achievements this year; both individual accomplishments and collective successes as part of the wider Andrean community. Some of these highlights included:
Opening a new $6.5 million athletic complex, including synthetic turf field with grandstand seating for football, soccer and lacrosse; track and field facilities; baseball diamond and batting cages; and new parking lots
• Launching a $28 million expansion campaign that will include new facilities for drama, music, engineering and robotics, business and leadership studies, and enhanced food services: 2015 completion target date
• Delivering $175,000 in gifts to more than 200 families through the Holiday Hero Program in partnership with the York Region Children’s Aid Society
• Being awarded triple gold at the national MusicFest in Ottawa
• Winning 16 Division l team championships, 16 second-place finishes, and 7 third-place finishes (58 teams across 22 sports)
• Qualifing for OFSAA in soccer, football, volleyball, cross-country, swimming, Nordic ski, curling, rugby, track & field, badminton, and lacrosse
• Winning the World RoboCup Championship in Istanbul, Turkey
• Performing the play Spring Awakening and produced Focus, a 30-play drama festival
• Writing 234 Advanced Placement (AP) exams by 131 students in 17 subjects
• Hosting a sold-out IT conference attended by educators from across Canada on integrating technology in the classroom and the School’s convertible tablet program
• Welcoming Roch Carrier, author of The Hockey Sweater, for a day on campus
• Meeting the School’s strategic plan goal of increasing Middle School enrolment by 30% in one year
• Implementing a successful new grade 5 program for September 2012
Looking ahead, SAC's Robotics team will represent Canada at the World RoboCup Championship in Mexico this week; the largest contingent ever -- 37 students -- will travel to Tanzania in July/Aug for the SASSAW; and in August the St. Andrew’s Wind Ensemble, Pipes and Drums Band and Old Boy musicians will perform at the 2012 London Olympics.
