SAC Spirit Soars at Homecoming 2012
Posted: September 25, 2012
It was a perfect day: blues skies overhead, SAC sports teams winning on the fields and courts, and hundreds of guests mingling and enjoying the sunny weather. You couldn’t have asked for anything better for the annual St. Andrew’s Homecoming, which took place this past Saturday.
“It was a wonderful weekend for the entire Andrean community,” says Headmaster Kevin McHenry. “The weather cooperated and our teams played well. Congratulations to everyone involved for a very successful Homecoming weekend.”
“Home” for the festivities were past parents, Old Boys, students, current parents, faculty, staff and friends. There was something for everyone: games, rides, raffles, free treats, and the popular Parents Guild Bake Sale with delicious treats that sold out in record time.
The Kids Zone with its rides and games was a huge hit with Middle School boys, and among the raffles was a chance to win a school-themed cake created by grade 9 student Tristan Tsvetanov ’16. A variety of vendors were also on hand with booths to display their wares.
“It takes a team to create an event like Homecoming,” notes Natalie Owen James, the Parents Guild Homecoming Chair who was instrumental in helping to organize the day’s events. “We had unbelievable support from new parents, past parents and the Parents Guild this year, which is why the event was such a great success.”
A total of 1,700 guests were fed over the course of the day, including meals served in the Great Hall and at the outdoor barbeque, thanks to our amazing Food Services team.
Face painting proved to be one of the most popular attractions, and many of the spectators at the day’s sports events cheered on the home teams with freshly painted cheeks (red and white stripes representing the School’s colours). Prefects handed out clappers, horns, and rally towels to help cheer on our Saints.
The show of boisterous school spirit inspired victory by SAC’s Varsity teams and recorded a win for their first regular season games. First Football defeated Ottawa’s Ashbury College 45-12; 1st Soccer orchestrated another rout when they took the field against Crescent School, winning 8-1; and 1st Volleyball blanked Crescent School 3-0.
“It was such a thrill to look up at the packed stands during our games this year,” says Natalie Owen James. “All the team spirit, great athleticism and fine coaching ensured that our Homecoming day ended on a winning note.”
