Trip to restaurant a cultural excursion for French students

Posted: June 11, 2012

As an end-of-the-year celebration, the grade 6 Core and Enriched French classes shared a meal en français. The experience took place at Port Soirée, a quaint French restaurant in Schomberg.

When the boys arrived they were greeted by the proprietor of the establishment with a jolly ‘bonjour’ and addressed them in French. They ordered their meals in French and did so flawlessly. It was delightful to listen to the boys place their orders and see their beaming smiles as they realized the garçon understood what they were saying and that they, in turn, could answer all the garçon’s questions.

The meal was a way to reward the boys for the hard work they displayed in the French program this year. It also tied in with the theme, ‘Au restaurant’, studied in class this year.

Cultural excursions such as these allow the students to live the language beyond the classroom walls. They can use the second language they have learned in an authentic setting, conversing with people who are fluent in French.
